The year that was...

I can't go back to yesterday
- because I was a different person then
This will hurt me - December 18 2012

Boredom is rage spread thin
This will hurt me - December 16 2012

The year has nearly passed by.
Using ONE of the ideas in the above post titles from Kris McCracken's blog:

Create an opinion piece OR descriptive narrative with some element of reflection
on your year that was.

Drama Tour Success!

From 13th to 21st July - over school winter holidays - a very happy gathering of students enjoyed a successful 2012 drama tour of the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Their show One rocked their fellow students in the north of Australia.
One raises issues pertaining to teen violence, safe partying, peer pressure, bullying, mistakes and consequences and ultimately explores tragedy as a result of one stupid action.
It was a show for teenagers by teenagers!

Here is the cast gathered outside one of 6 different high schools where they performed over 9 days.including Marsden State High School, Ormeau Woods SHS, King’s Christian College, Tamborine Mountain College, Miami SHS and Nerang SHS. But it was the last school - Nerang SHS - where some magic happened.

From Natalie Burns - the wonder woman orchestrating the drama group and the tour:
The most rewarding performance of the six was our final show at Nerang State High School. We had been told at most schools that we visited that this was a very rough school and that the students were likely to laugh at us and disrespect the performance. This, however, was not the case. The 150 students who viewed the show were completely engrossed by the performance we presented. They did not speak throughout, and if one spoke out, they were quickly hushed by their peers. At the conclusion of the performance many audience members were in tears, and despite the fact that we had now entered their lunch time, all students stayed behind for a formal Q and A and mingling session. One teacher commented that she felt privileged to have viewed our performance; another informed me that their school is very much an Arts school, but they do not have the funds to bring performances to the school or take their students to shows. So when an opportunity such as this comes along it is treasured by the students. It was an extremely emotional performance as this was the last time ‘One’ would ever be performed. Many of our cast teared up on stage, along with three directors watching proudly from the crowd.

But life on the Gold Coast was not all work on the stage for these students.
There were a few interesting sidelines - like a visit to Dreamworld and the experience of watching a performance by Cirque du Soleil in Brisbane.

MUNA

MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY (MUNA) On 15 June I arrived at Forest Edge camp to begin a two day debating contest, representing the nation of Peru with Kaitlyn from Toorak College as my partner. We had never met before so had researched Peru individually. Two person teams from over ten different schools were competing. We all dressed in traditional clothing. We debated many issues from around the world including the threat of nuclear weapons, climate change and even asylum seekers. The weekend was good fun with many great speeches being made and many great questions being asked by all nations. At the end of the weekend, Brazil took home the overall winner trophy while my partner and I won the Peace trophy. We were commended on the fact that we were the only team from two different schools. I am thrilled to win this trophy for Casey Grammar School.

Congratulations Taylor A (Year 11) on your wonderful success!

"One" for the Drama Tour Ensemble

One is the show for the Drama Tour to the Gold Coast, Queensland this year.
Students involved range from Years 9 to 12.
Natalie Burns is the magical, never tiring main director.

Hannah Mueller, the Drama Captain for 2012, explained in the school assembly:
The Gold Coast Drama Tour Ensemble have been rehearsing their original production ‘One’ since October last year. The ensemble has been working hard learning lines, devising choreography, writing and composing songs, learning cover songs. The performance is a musical and involves 31 students from Years 9-12. It is a touring production and in the July school holidays we will be taking the show up to Queensland to perform at six different high schools. We couldn’t be more excited, but before we set off we will be performing the premiere show in Melbourne. What would you do if you knew that every decision you made would shape the rest of your life? Rachel is a quiet, academic girl, sick of being told to relax. Torn between liking two boys, wanting people to like her and wanting to do well in school, the decisions she makes in one day change everything. With best friends, boys, ex-friends and an upcoming party to deal with, Rachel and her peers learn that no matter who we are, the choices we make now define who we will become in the future. One moment, one decision, one mistake, one life changed...forever.
About 400 people viewed the premiere in the Casey Grammar Performaing Arts Centre.

Wishing this great band of students a successful and fun drama tour over the July holidays!
And take care of Ms Burns!

When in Rome

On the evening of 7th June, Year 10 students of Casey Grammar presented the fun, entertaining When in Rome.
Earlier in the week, to advertise the show, the cast dressed up and danced round the school handing out leaflets advertising the show.
Such a colourful sight seeing the Roman world come to life.
And under the creative, skilled guidance of Ms Natalie Burns, the show rolled out to the delight of about 200 people in the audience!

Congratulations to you all!
You are wonderful!
